Why are racing pigeons so expensive

Racing pigeons aren’t the typical bird you’ll find on the city streets.

These pedigree birds can sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

In March 2019, Armando the racing pigeon sold to a bidder in China for over $1.3 million.

So what is it that makes racing pigeons so expensive?

It has taken hundreds of years to breed the racing pigeons which are competing now. In general all pigeon fancier want t0 keep the best breeders, flyers on there own loft to enjoy the competition.

Therefore if somebody wants to improve his own pigeon loft there is a value measured for the pleasure which will have a take off when the best pigeons are on the loft.

The most common prices vary from 50 euro to 250 euro per pigeon.

All above 250 euro are the special ones, sister, brothers, daughter sons, father, mother which will go for 1.000,- euro to 2.500 euro.

The winners are going for 5.000,- euro but when for example the best of the best are raced together for example from the race from Barcelona more than 1.200 km those top 5 pigeons go for 25.000,- until 125.000,- euro depending on their pedigree.
