Color in pigeons is often discussed emotionally.

But genetically, color follows structured rules.
Base colors:
- Blue (wild type)
- Black
- Ash red
These are modified by dilution, spread, grizzle, pied patterns, and other genetic modifiers.
Color genes follow Mendelian inheritance patterns — dominant and recessive relationships.
But here is the key:
Color does not equal performance.
However…
Indirect genetic linkage can occur. If a certain color repeatedly appears in high-performing lines, it is usually because the performance genes travel with the color genes within that family.
Correlation is not causation — but it is not random either.
The serious breeder selects for performance first, aesthetics second.
Yet there is nothing wrong with aiming for both.
A Barcelona finisher that is also visually striking carries pride in two dimensions.
