Henk Wegh, Lochem, Champion Morning Release 2018 Marathon North

You don’t become a champion of the morning release of the Marathon Noord just like that.

You have to get one of your two registered pigeons in the top of the results in three flights.

On the morning release the flights from Barcelona, Marseille and Perpignan count for this.

The competition consists of the best fans of the ZLU flights from “above the great rivers”.

The area runs from the Northern part of South Holland, via North Holland, Utrecht, Gelderland, Overijssel, Drenthe, Groningen to Friesland. You can check which names we all encounter.

I’m not going to mention them, because you can easily forget a top match.

Henk Wegh from Lochem was the best of all these toppers in 2018.

Henk has earned his spurs in recent decades on the ZLU flights… especially on Barcelona.

In addition to his own loft, many other lofts have also benefited from the well-inherited quality of Henk’s pigeons.

After a few lesser years, Henk has found his way up again from 2017.

This year he can add a pearl to his honors list… Champion Morning Release of the Marathon North.

A crown on a good season for the president of the Fondunie 2000.

The enthusiast
Henk Wegh (78 years old) from Lochem is the Champion Morning Release of the Marathon North.

Henk has now retired for 15 years. The last years of his working life he was director of the Daf dealer (Cosmo) in Lochem.

Henk grew up in an inland skipper family.

Father Wegh owned a steam tug. Henk grew up with an aunt and uncle in Doornenburg.

That was, of course, because the family was not in the same place for long. In those years Henk caught a pigeon, which he put in a rabbit hutch.

There was one more. That of course became a couple. From high school Henk went to boarding school. The pigeons had to come along.

The sisters of the boarding school helped take care of the pigeons.

After Henk even had a pigeon in a box on the deck on a ship where he worked, he decided to live permanently in Venray.

In 1970 he started there with pigeons.

His start came because he came into contact with Joost van Haren from Venray through his work.

In 1974 Henk married and went to live in Overloon.

There he started again with pigeons.

The last new start was in September 1988.

Henk worked in Lochem at Cosmo, the Daf dealer.

In 1989, the champion of the Morning Release at the North Marathon bred the first youngsters at the current address.

The first year it went well in the loft. Henk should have sold the previous house with the loft together.

The new owner could do something with that pigeon loft. In the yard of his current house there was an old barn for a few pigs.

He converted this location into a pigeon loft. This was intended to be temporary.

Within not too long a real pigeon shelter would be built.

But when things went very well in the temporary loft (the old pig shed), this mini-stable has remained Henk’s racing loft to this day.

2012-198

The pigeons that won the Championship
Henk takes 11th prize in the competition of Marathon Noord at Barcelona. The pigeon that was responsible for this is ‘de 1 98’ of 2012.

The father of this hen comes from Gerard Koopman.

The pedigree of the one day long distance pigeon includes Duco, Mister Ermerveen, Gazira, Ribucan and Edana.

The mother of “the 198” is an Inbred to the cock of “Het Goede Koppel”.

The grandfather on the mother’s side is a son of “Het Goede Koppel”.

He won a.o. the 10th national Barcelona.

The grandmother on the mother’s side is a daughter of the cock of “Het Goede Koppel”.

The mother of ‘de 198’ is 100% of the Jeu Vervuurt kind.

“The 198” has now won 8 overnight prizes, including three at Barcelona.

The pigeon that our man from Lochem took from Marseille (21st prize in the Marathon North Foundation) is ‘the 574’ of 2015.

This cock took 70th national from Pau (earlier in 2018), 59th national from Cahors 2017 and another prize at Perpignan 2018.

This dark-scratch cock comes from his father’s side from a coupling ‘Son Gouden Barcelona’ from the comb. Vrösch-Meijers from Heerlen with the Perpignan pigeon from Henk himself.

This hen won 4th international Perpignan and comes out “Son Gouden Barcelona” 05 “with granddaughter” Gouden Barcelona “05”.

The mother of “the 574” is “the 198” of 2012, the pigeon from Barcelona, described above.

At Perpignan, the 2015 Morning Release champion had the “542” in front.

In addition to the 50th national Perpignan 2018, this hen won the 44th national Orange in 2017.

Her father is a grandson of the 2nd International Barcelona.

The paternal grandmother comes from Sam de Jong… from his Super Couple.

The paternal grandmother is a daughter of the 2nd International Barcelona with a daughter of an F3-tje with the daughter 7e national Tarbes van Jeu Vervuurt.

The mother of “the 542” is the Blue Barcelona, who won the 53rd Barcelona with Henk.

She comes again from the 10th national Barcelona (from the Goede Koppel van Vervuurt) with “Het Barcelona-pigeon” (87th national Barcelona).

This latter hen again comes from a Vervuurt hen with a son of the TV winner, who was then linked to the father of “De Autowinnaar”.

This link again contains “De Wegh-hen” from both sides.

2015-574

The season and the care
Henk started with 30 pairs of racing pigeons.

He mated on March 20 and the racing couples all raised one young.

The pigeons are raced on the nest throughout the season.

The favorite positions for the marathon flights are 10 days or about 7 days boy.

Henk: “Both cocks and hens can get along well in these positions.”

At the beginning of the season, Henk skips a few short flights.

Our champion from Lochem: “The old pigeons suddenly go on a race of about 200 km.

I take the yearlings away a few times and then go on a race of 120 km.

This year, health has been good from the start.

So good that the form followed in mid-June “.

Henk feeds Matador food during the breeding season and Mariman during the racing season.

This food is supplemented with candy seeds, hemp and a high-fat mixture.

They get the latter the last days before basketing.

Before the racing season the pigeons receive a parastop treatment and a wompil.

On the first eggs they are given a cure with BS against the yellow for 5 days.

All these products come from Henk de Weerd.

Henk never visits a vet during the flights. He says about this: “If you have to go to the vet during the 7-week season, it is already too late anyway.”

Besides the aforementioned means, Henk does not give natural products.

They do get “all kinds of things” on a regular basis.

2015-542

Finally
Henk has been the chairman of the Fondunie 2000 for some years now.

Finally, a nice statement from Henk, which reminded me of my grandfather: “Pigeon sport is a disease, you will never get rid of it.

You are always working with the future, so you stay active.

That is an advantage’.

My grandfather always added: “A pigeon fancier always gets a year older than” a normal person “… next year the pigeons will certainly fly better.”

Henk I would like to thank you (also on behalf of Mike) for the pleasant Saturday afternoon in Lochem.

We will still see each other regularly… especially in Doetinchem at the award ceremony.
